And the dub supposedly translated something Honey said to Dandy wrong? And then someone spread a post around online explaining how Honey was supposed to be a super complex character and that was some sort of hint or whatever? Even back then I thought “How the hell do you know that for a fact? There’s only been 1 episode”. Then an entire season passes and season 2 gets 2 episodes in and Honey is nothing more than the same waitress she was in episode 1. I mean way to talk out of your ass, right?

Back in August I had the opportunity to work on Season two, episode 3 of Space Dandy. It came out recently and I’m seeing the final cleaned up and colored cuts for the first time!

Here are screenshots of the cuts that I did layout and key animation for. Pretty simple cuts, but I was honored to work with Yuasa and Science Saru in general on this project… I want to thank them for their patience with my difficulty with the timing sheets as well as all the effort they went through to translate back and forth and work with foreign animators.

I wish my Japanese was better, but I hope i can work on more anime in the future! Even if it was very stressful!!!!!!!!!! How intimidating is was was well to have my work judged and corrected by Yuasa himself… but I learned a lot for sure.

I think i missed a one cuts, i did 11 total but if i missed any they were low key… The rest of the episode looks soooo good too everyone is so talented

Around April of last year my friend, Jamie Vickers, encouraged Ben Li and I to apply to animate on Masaaki Yuasa’s “Space Dandy” episode.  Yuasa-san was apparently looking for international animators and posted about it on his Facebook wall.  We turned in our reels and promptly got the gig.

I decided to only take on four shots just to feel it out and to make sure I got it all in on time.

The Carpaccio animation and shadow passes weren’t used in the final cut, but I decided to include them for this post to show what was turned in and approved.  The rest of the drawings I did came through though!  Very exciting to see the final animation all cleaned up, colored and cut together.

Yuasa-san was very open to us using Flash to animate our shots.  The production took the final keys (genga’s), printed them out, retraced onto paper and inbetweened those drawings.  It’s a pretty wild pipeline, but it totally worked.  I am grateful to have experienced working under one of my most favorite directors, Masaaki Yuasa-san.

If granted the opportunity I would like to do more animations for Yuasa-san and other overseas productions in the future.  For now I will continue working on my personal project that I aim to get done before the end of the year.

Casual PSA for you guys, last night’s Space Dandy was directed by Masaaki Yuasa! Masaaki Yuasa is an interesting director because all of his animation direction has a very distinct style to it. It seems to be ‘bad’ but it’s actually extremely stylistic.

His most famous works are Kemonozume, Kaiba, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (Aka The Tatami Galaxy), Ping Pong, Mind Game, and he just recently released an animated short funded through kickstarter called Kick-Heart. Also, he just happened to direct an episode of Adventure Time, titled “Food Chain.”

I also noticed that many of you were saying things like, “this episode had very poor animation.” and unfortunately, I’m going to tell you that in this case, you are wrong. This episode might have been conventionally ugly, but the actual animation quality was quite incredible! So please don’t say this episode had poor animation, because it didn’t okay? I’m not infringing your write to say the episode was UGLY, for the record. Yuasa’s style can be a tough pill to swallow, but I just felt like I had to speak up.
